Spring Planting The Rite of Spring

Spring Planting: The Rite of Spring

Springtime is just around the corner and a big part of this time is planting. Perennials, annuals, herbs, trees, and shrubs – you name it! If you’re unsure about which plants to plant, or what type of plant will work best for your property, there are plenty of resources available to help you out. Though many different websites can provide information on which plants will grow well in your area, they don’t all have the same information.

Spring Planting in Texas

Spring Planting is a time-honored tradition for Texans. It may seem like the worst time to plant plants and shrubs, but spring planting is an opportunity for you to have beautiful flowers in your landscape. It’s also a good time of year to do some much-needed pruning on bushes that are taking up too much space or don’t need to be there anymore. Spring planting should always happen in phases so it’s not all done at once.

Spring Planting makes a lot of sense for those that have very limited areas of land and don’t have the time or money to plant large gardens using fall plants. It also works well for owners that do not want their plants to get too much heat from the intense summer sun. If you live in an area where it is too hot for outdoor planting then Spring Planting is the way to go. If your soil has a high level of clay or isn’t well-draining it might be wise to do fall planting. Spring planting will not only give you more time but will result in healthier roots and less stress on plants that are planted later than usual.

Benefits of Spring Planting

Spring is a beautiful time of the year, with flowers blooming on trees and new green leaves appearing. Spring planting is a great way to bring in a burst of life that’s often lacking during winter. There are many benefits which include:

-Conservation: In spring, we plant more than we harvest; so as the seasons progress, less fertilizer is needed

-Clean Air: The fresh air and activity of nature cleans the air around us

-Aesthetic Appeal: Flowers add beauty to an otherwise dreary existence

-Pesticide Reduction: Plants absorb chemicals from the ground that reduce pesticide use.

Some Spring plants are usually very small and you can’t plant them in the ground, except for a few exceptions. So how do you get your new plants started in the spring? You have several options available to you including:

1. Potting – In potting, seeds are first sown into pots or seed trays and then moved into the garden later in the season. This way of planting is great because it’s easy to take care of and you can move plants from place to place. The drawback of this method is that it often takes a long time for the seedlings to get started and established so you need to plant in containers that are large enough for them to grow very well in (especially if you’re growing from seeds that take a long time to germinate).

Start by getting a pot big enough that your seedlings will be able to fit in it, but not so big that they’re going to be falling out of it when you’re watering them. Then you fill the pot with potting soil and place your seedlings into it. Next, you water the soil of the seedling pot until it’s dry. After this, you place a plant from your garden into another pot, then cover the top of that second pot with more soil or just cover up the second pot entirely.

When your seedlings have emerged from their pots, you give them an opportunity to grow. After about a week or so, you’ll want to put the seedlings out into the shade for about an hour or two at a time in order to keep them healthy and avoid heat issues with really hot days

2. Seedling Trays – If you don’t have any pots, then you can use seed trays instead. You can either use peat pellets or perlite to fill the bottom of the tray. Then you can use regular potting soil and seeds are placed on top of it. You then water this seedling tray once a day or so until they have germinated or are ready to go into their new pots.

What Else Could I Plant?

Some things are best planted in the spring. Plants like green beans and lettuce were meant to be planted in the spring. In this way, other plants will not compete for nutrients or water from these plants. Another thing that usually does well in the spring is flowering annuals. Annual flowers take up a lot of space and typically need to be replanted every year. If you plant annual flowers in the fall, they will not be able to bloom in the spring. In this way, there is less competition for resources from other plants.
